This piece sketches the visual language for an interface I'm designing that provides a richer, deeper, more tangible way of relating to one's digital music collection. I'd like to allow for the kind of arbitrary and instantaneous piling, grouping and stacking that occurs with records, tapes, and CDs in the real world (on top of a stereo, in a glovebox, in piles on the floor). I employ the construct of a spine to allow this on screen. This digital package can expand to allow full cover, reverse and interior views, as well. I believe the development of a new graphic language is key to establishing a more resonant connection with our ever-expanding digital music libraries.
