Dream Acts

Funded by the Town of Chapel Hill's "Into the Streets" grant, "Dream Acts" was the culmination of a community art project that began in January, 2011. I worked with artists Eleanor Blake and Neill Prewitt on the project, which over the course of six months engaged residents of the Abbey Court Apartments in Carrboro, NC. We built relationships and encouraged exploratory artmaking, ultimately developing the concept for an exhibition that recreated the public and private spaces of Abbey Court. The exhibition was comprised of residents’ art, co-created work, and our work. Through an environmental assemblage of video, photography and objects, "Dream Acts" shared the creative energy of Abbey Court with the broader community, while exploring the boundaries, real and imaginary, that shape our perception of and interaction with an environment or a group.

The exhibition ran June 10–July 9, 2011 in Chapel Hill. On June 22, we held a panel discussion on community-building strategies, which can be viewed in its entirety here. Perhaps the best recap of the project is the documentary we made about it:
